A program of the Centre for Living with Dying
The Centre's Bay Area Critical Incident Stress Management Team provides intervention, support and educational programs that include pre-incident training, on-scene support services, demobilizations, defusings, debriefings, peer support and family support. The Team is comprised of mental health professionals and peer support personnel who represent numerous emergency service and public safety providers in the Bay Area.

Courses are POST Certified Reimbursement Plan III; course numbers are BRN Provider #02772, BBS Provider #1597, Paramedic-EMT CE Provider #43-700.

Advanced payment for registration is required. Visa and MasterCard accepted. A comprehensive description of each course and its certification is available on request. Cancellation of registration needs to be made five days before class for refund of fees.


Critical Incident Stress Management
CISM Basic Training

Regardless of experience, personality or training, ALL emergency personnel and care giving responders are susceptible to CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS. This workshop will help you:

  • learn the dynamics of CIS as an occupational hazard
  • develop and refine CIS debriefing and defusing techniques
  • practice debriefing and defusing techniques
  • develop coping skills to identify CIS in yourself and your coworkers.

Advanced Critical Incident Stress Management

  • Review the dynamics of CIS as an occupational hazard
  • Refine CIS debriefing and defusing techniques through practicals and role playing
  • Compare debriefing techniques with other teams
  • Develop coping skills to identify CIS in yourself and your coworkers
  • Teach skills in team development, training and morale
  • Practicing tools for debriefing the debriefers

Trauma Communications and Death Notification: Techniques for Effective and Compassionate Response

POST Plan III Course #8610-22321

Designed for officers, deputies, detectives, supervisors, physicians, nursing staff, social workers, firefighters, paramedics, district attorneys, coroners, dispatchers, therapists/counselors, and clergy.

Giving the notification, managing survivors and loved ones and performing job duties in the aftermath of death or trauma can be taxing on responding personnel. The goal of this eight-hour course is to make a difficult job more manageable and reduce the impact upon personnel in the aftermath. 

  • A broad understanding of death, the grief process and potential impact on survivors is explored
  • Specific intervention techniques are addressed through lecture, discussion and practice
  • Tools for managing critical incident stress for responding personnel will be given

The Art of Compassion

The day you spend in this workshop will provided you valuable skills for your professional life. Explore strategies for survival in the care giving disciplines. Individuals who work closely with people in grief and loss situations are confronted continually with emotional pain. Dealing effectively with the pain, and providing meaningful support, can be challenging and exhausting.

The Art of Compassion course is designed to augment the professional's formal training, providing in-depth exposure to grief and loss situations and to the tools available for facilitating healing. The sessions are a combination of didactic presentation and group interaction.

Creative Tools for Transforming Change

Change and loss are a part of our daily lives. This workshop addresses life-affirming tools to transform difficulty into depth, pain into meaning. Managing Loss and Change
