On December 6, 2002 at 11:00 am, San Jose city council member Cindy Chavez will address a classroom of San Jose High Academy students on her commitment to keep the streets of San Jose safe for youth. Ms. Chavez has been an avid supporter of Bill Wilson Center's Project Safe Place, a program that provides a safety network for children by joining together businesses, schools and city facilities. Any youth who is in danger can walk into a site bearing the Safe Place logo, and can access immediate help from trained staff and volunteers. Lyndsey Marks, Program Coordinator for Project Safe Place will do a presentation about the Safe Place program. Cindy Chavez will follow Ms. Marks and talk to the students about the positive impact Project Safe Place has in the community. She will address San Jose's commitment to keeping San Jose streets safe for our children. "Cindy Chavez's commitment to Safe Place has made a huge difference," said Lyndsey Marks, Program Coordinator, Project Safe Place. "It is a great opportunity for the students at San Jose High Academy to hear directly from Ms. Chavez that the city of San Jose is dedicated to their safety." Project Safe Place is funded by the City of San Jose. Bill Wilson Center's Safe Place program offers 282 San Jose locations that are available to respond to youth. Bill Wilson Center is able to respond to calls for help 24 hours a day, providing children who are troubled or in danger with a safe haven. Since the program began in 1996, over 1,000 young people have been helped. Locations serving as Safe Place sites include 7-Eleven Stores, Round Table Pizza, Safeway Stores, San Jose School Districts, and many other private and publicly owned facilities. The goal of Project Safe Place is to have the Safe Place sign recognized as a symbol of help and safety for all children who are lost or scared, abused, threatened or in any unsafe situation. Those interested in learning more about Project Safe Place should contact Lyndsey Marks at (408) 850-8466. |
